Lyme Disease: My Natural Healing Journey & What Helped

Understanding Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a complex condition caused by a bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi, typically transmitted through the bite of infected ticks. Many people associate Lyme with tick exposure, but not everyone recalls a tick bite or sees an initial rash.

Some people may experience early signs like fatigue, joint or muscle discomfort, headaches, or flu-like symptoms. Others may experience a bullseye rash, though this does not appear in every case.

For some, symptoms may resolve quickly. For others — including myself — symptoms can continue or fluctuate over time, affecting multiple systems including immune function, digestion, energy, mood, and neurological health. In certain cases, this is often referred to as Chronic Lyme Disease or Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS).

Because every individual experience with Lyme is unique, many people explore a variety of ways to support their overall health and well-being.

The Complexity of Lyme Disease: Co-Infections & Whole-Body Impact

One of the challenges with Lyme disease is that it's often not just Lyme alone. Many people also deal with co-infections — other pathogens or overloads that may be active alongside Borrelia burgdorferi. These may include:

  • Bartonella

  • Babesia

  • Ehrlichia

  • Anaplasma

  • Mycoplasma

  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

  • Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)

  • Candida and other fungal overgrowth

  • Viral reactivations

  • Parasites and gut imbalances

These additional stressors can affect the nervous system, joints, digestion, immune function, energy levels, and even mood. This makes Lyme not just an infection, but a whole-body condition that requires a full-spectrum support approach.

For me personally, I found that starting with the basics was extremely important:

  • Gut health

  • Gentle detox support

  • Immune system nourishment

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Reducing inflammatory triggers like sugar, processed foods, and artificial ingredients

Supporting these core systems made a significant difference in my ability to manage symptoms while addressing the many layers of Lyme and its co-infections.

My Personal Experience with Lyme Disease

As someone who personally battles Lyme, I understand how frustrating it can be when symptoms linger or worsen. For me, antibiotics not only didn’t resolve my symptoms — they actually made certain things harder. I reached a point where I had to explore additional avenues for supporting my body naturally.

Through extensive research, trial and error, and professional guidance, I’ve learned that Lyme support often needs to go beyond a single approach. Healing from Lyme is a full-body process, and finding a routine that works can make a major difference in managing symptoms and supporting long-term wellness.

The Lifestyle Changes That Helped Me Most

1️⃣ Dietary Changes

One of the most important factors in my personal Lyme support journey has been my diet. Lyme can affect gut health, inflammation levels, and immune function. For that reason, I focus on:

  • Eliminating refined sugars

  • Avoiding artificial ingredients, preservatives, and processed foods

  • Completely removing gluten

  • Focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods like organic vegetables, healthy fats, grass-fed proteins, and antioxidant-rich berries

These changes helped reduce inflammation and gave my body the nutrients it needed to stay resilient.

2️⃣ Infrared Sauna

Infrared sauna therapy has become one of my favorite tools for detoxification and symptom relief. The gentle heat helps support:

  • Circulation

  • Sweating and detox pathways

  • Muscle and joint relaxation

  • Overall calming of the nervous system

One thing I often hear from people is that they assume they need a large space or a full spa room to own a sauna — but that’s not true. I personally use a small, portable, low-EMF pop-up sauna that fits easily into a small space and allows me to get the benefits at home without needing a huge setup.

For those who have more space or are looking for a more permanent option, there are also small wooden low-EMF saunas that fit well into apartments, bedrooms, or spare rooms.

The key is consistency — having a sauna you can easily access makes a huge difference when trying to support the body through detox and chronic illness.

3️⃣ Stress Reduction & Nervous System Support

Chronic illness puts stress on both body and mind. I found that managing my stress levels through:

  • Deep breathing

  • Tapping (EFT — Emotional Freedom Technique) to help regulate emotions and reduce anxiety

  • Listening to calming frequency (Hz) music to support nervous system relaxation

  • Restorative yoga

  • Pacing and avoiding overexertion

4️⃣ Microcurrent & Frequency Devices (Zappers)

As part of my personal wellness routine, I’ve also found benefit from using a small portable zapper device, which delivers low-level microcurrents or frequencies. It was convenient and easy to wear while doing other activities. While research on these devices is still evolving, some people in the chronic illness and Lyme community use zappers as part of their natural wellness protocols to support microbial balance and overall energy levels.

Every person’s experience with Lyme is different. What worked for me may not be right for everyone — but my goal is to share options and empower others who are still searching for answers.

If you’re navigating Lyme disease — whether you’re early in your journey or living with long-term symptoms — please know that there are supportive tools available. I encourage you to work with a qualified practitioner to build a plan that’s right for your individual needs.
